Ask Gillian questions, online, live

by

Welcome to August.

I’m supposed to be shopping right now. It’s 6.8 degrees outside and raining and I’ve discovered my chair has glue on it. It must have, because nothing else explains the fact that I cannot move any closer to the door, no matter how many thoughts I have about the importance of shopping. Cold rain is just not something I want to walk through, perhaps. Tomorrow it’s market day, and I’ll be out then, come hail or rain or fleeting snow. Today, though, is other stuff and it wil just have to wait till Monday.

Remember, you can find me (live) on Saturday (Australian Eastern Standard Time) at the Conflux Minicon. I know it’s an SF convention, but I’d be delighted to have food history questions and chat as well. It only takes a minute to register, and best of all, it’s free.

The trouble with any convention is it’s hard to lead a normal life during it. I had originally planned to take impromptu food history breaks (to create short wells of sanity in my life, perhaps) but I realized today that this would mean being on the computer for far too many hours a day.

What I’ve done instead is found a book I haven’t introduced you to, The Grocer’s Encyclopedia: a compendium of useful information concerning foods of all kinds. How they are raised, prepared and marketed. How to care for them in the store and home. How best to use and enjoy them-and other valuable information for grocers and general storekeepers. It was compiled by Artemas Ward in 1911.

For the next three days (2 for the Minicon and one for everything I have to do to catch up after the Minicon) I’ll give you interesting extracts from it. Then life will become a bit more normal. Maybe.
