Heritage apples
Always do your civic duty: it pays extraordinary dividends. The dividend from my civic duty today was the opportunity to meet Jonathan Banks of Pialligo Apples. I knew about Pialligo Apples as an organic provider of cool climate fruit. What I didn’t know was that Jonathan has heritage apples going back considerably earlier than I expected. He even has pearmains! I am going to try to arrange a visit to his farm if I get enough food history students in my class next year. Pippins should be in season, though I don’t know about the other varieties. Even if they’re not ripe, we can look at the trees and ask questions and buy whatever fruit is in season. I’m very, very happy at the possibility of getting fourteenth to eighteenth century varieties locally.
